We manage variety evaluation in our Trial & Cultivar Centre in Nelson and at orchard testing sites in Nelson, Hawkes Bay and Central Otago. This allows the evaluation of the performance of new cultivars against existing selections in the key fruit growing regions.
We can advise on the best method of intellectual property protection for each new variety. We can manage the protection through Non-Propagation Agreements, Trademarks and Plant Variety Rights.
Waimea Variety Management can license Waimea Nurseries and other Sub-Licensees for with propagation licenses within New Zealand, depending on what is in the best interest of the development of the variety and to maximise the returning of royalties to the variety owner.
Through our customised computerised tracking systems we monitor tree production and collect royalties for trees propagated in New Zealand.
Currently we manage the propagation licensing in New Zealand on behalf of the following nurseries, breeders and agencies:
Delbard Nurseries, France
Cornell University, USA
East Malling Research Station, UK
Sunglo Varieties, NZ
Roy Hart, NZ
Austin Orchards, NZ
Greg & Stephanie Buck, NZ
Grahams Factree, Australia
Nevis Fruit, NZ
Taylor Family Trust, NZ
Waimea Variety Management has been involved with the development of club varieties in New Zealand, including Apples TentationTM (Delblush), Sonya® (Nevson) and Ambrosia and the open varieties Aztec, Candy, Redfield, Huaguan, Pinova, Rosy Glow and Lady in Red.
We regularly communicate with over 500 New Zealand fruit growers and fruit marketing companies, via email, print media. We have excellent relationships with the industry corporates for the development of key varieties.
We operate a purpose-built level two quarantine facility accredited by the NZ Ministry for Primary Industry (MPI) who regularly inspected to ensure the plant material is free of pest, disease and virus prior to release. This quarantine facility enables us to source material from accredited facilities (currently CTIFL in France, Prosser at Washington State University, USA).
We prepare the plant material and undertake the required inspections, phytosanitary certificates and import permits for the export of varieties.
We are proud of our valued and long established relationships with leading breeders and agencies that allows us to offer you the world's best varieties and rootstocks.
Waimea Nurseries is the sole New Zealand member of the INN (International New-Varieties Network) a global variety development alliance linking the world's largest pipfruit nurseries.
The following nurseries are licensed to grow varieties managed by Waimea Variety Management:
